    Bataan survivor dies at 88

    LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) -
One of New Mexico's last survivors of the infamous Bataan Death March has died.

Clifford "Smokey" Martinez of Las Cruces died Thursday at Memorial Medical Center. He was 88.

A memorial Mass is planned for Monday afternoon at St. Genevieve Catholic Church in Las Cruces.

Martinez's son in-law, Joe Garcia, says Martinez was a survivor in every sense of the word. Much of his early life was spent overcoming adversity, and he wrote a book titled "Hard Knocks" where he described some of his tough experiences.

During World War II, some 70,000 American and Filipino troops who surrendered on the Bataan Peninsula in the Philippines in April 1942 were forced to march 65 miles without food or water to Japanese prison camps. Those who collapsed along the way were shot or bayoneted.

About 1,800 of the captives were from New Mexico. Fewer than 900 survived the march or the prison camps.

Vice President Al Gore meets with the Patriarch of Constantinople

This was an interesting article when I found it on the Orthodox News Website.

The day after his Nameday, on Tuesday June 12th, former Vice President Albert Gore, Jr. was presented to His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew at the Patriarchal Headquarters in Instanbul. Vice President Gore spent an hour with his All Holiness, discussing issues of mutual concern on the environment. Among the substantive issues, Mr. Gore also reminisced with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew on the 1997 visit of His All Holiness to the Vice Presidential Residence, where, Mr. Gore, during a breakfast he hosted in honor of the Ecumenical Patriarch, termed His All Holiness “The Green Patriarch.”

At the meeting, His All Holiness invited Vice President Gore to the Seventh Ecological Symposium entitled “The Artic: Mirror of Life” scheduled for Fall of 2007 (www.rsesymposia.org). During the meeting, His Eminence Metropolitan Maximos of Pittsburgh and His Eminence Metropolitan Athenagoras of Mexico were invited to participate in the discussions.

Later that evening, at an address given at the Ciragan Palace for the World Wildlife Fund in Turkey , Mr. Gore recognized His All Holiness Bartholomew (who was in attendance), as the leading spiritual spokesman for environmental causes, and as Ecumenical Patriarch – the spiritual head of the worldwide Orthodox Church – a vital bridge between Turkey and the European Union. Mr. Gore emphasized the importance of the Ecumenical Patriarchate being on Turkish soil.

    Sumer time fun!

Well the semester has come to a close and summer is here. I am glad classes are done with for the spring semester. I don't have a lot planned for this summer. There are a couple of thing which I might do but I am not sure as of yet. I do want to blog a bit this summer and if I get really courageous then I just might rewrite the code for my page and give it a new look.

I also want to take the motorcycle out for a ride --a long one that is. Although I am not sure where just yet. I was thinking of driving up to Maine or perhaps out to Ohio. Gas prices don't hit me to hard when I am driving the motorcycle although the prices are still way to high for my liking.

I also have a big list of books that I am reading and I want to post about at least one of them. The The Diary of St. Maria Faustina. It is the book about a Polish nun who lived during the late 30's and died just before Germany invaded Poland. It's a good book and her life story is pretty amazing.

Well, that is all for now. I will post some more in a day or so. I hope everyone has a good summer. Be safe and God Bless!
